During your consultation we’ll administer pain relief first, take a diagnostic x-ray of your tooth, then administer a local anaesthetic to relieve and numb the area. We’ll then isolate the tooth using material placed over the top of it, and remove any existing damage or bacteria.
Very gently, we’ll then carefully and thoroughly remove the infected pulp, remove and disinfect the inner canals of the tooth and then fill these with a rubber like material called gutta percha.
To seal your tooth we’ll apply a composite filling material. If your tooth originally had extensive damage, a crown will be applied at a subsequent appointment. Your tooth is now fixed, pain-free and ready to use once again.
Root Canal treatment is a dental procedure performed by a dentist or endodontist during which a damaged or infected tooth pulp is removed from the tooth, following a diagnostic x-ray. The tooth’s canals are then cleaned, filled and sealed to prevent further bacteria from causing infection. This procedure is used to save the tooth – ensuring it can remain in the mouth.
This is case dependent, but up to two standard appointments are typical per tooth.
Our root canal treatments start from $1300 and can be paid for using our finance options if required.
Toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold food/drink or when eating generally, localised pain, swelling of the gums or face, a loose tooth, abscess or pus. An x-ray following a visit to your general dentist will confirm this.
Prevention is always better than cure – so keep your six-monthly check-up and clean appointments, see your dentist if you experience any type of trauma to your teeth, if you experience toothache or sensitivity, notice cracks in your teeth, or if you receive feedback that you’re grinding your teeth at night. These circumstances can all lead to infection of the root canal.
A root canal infection and the consequences if left untreated (further infection, tooth loss, bone loss) are certainly more concerning than the root canal procedure itself. The latter involves pain relief and numbing via local anaesthetic of the area, so whilst you won’t experience pain during the treatment, you might experience some discomfort or swelling afterwards, which can be relieved by over the counter medication. As with all dental procedures – follow your dentist’s aftercare advice.
